Ancient Healing Tradition

Traditional Thai massage (Nuad Thai) dates back over 2500 years and has been depicted in carvings on temples all over Thailand.

Jivaka Komarabhacca (or Dr. Shivago among other names) is considered the so-called Father Doctor of Traditional Thai Medicine. He is said to have been the personal doctor of the Buddha. Trained in India in Ayurvedic medical practices, Dr Shivago incorporated those practices as well as yoga into his development of Thai massage.

A Spiritual Practice

Buddhist monks were instrumental in preserving Thai massage so it is closely linked with Buddhist practices as well, particularly with the spiritual practices of mindfulness and meditation. Buddhist monks would offer Thai massage as an act of compassionate service seeing it as a tool to heal both body and spirit.

Movements & Sen Lines

Thai massage consists of rhythmic movements, compression, deep breathing, and yoga inspired assisted stretching as well as pressure on Sen lines which are energy lines throughout the body that are believed to influence the body’s physical and energetic state.

The Setup

You’ll begin by changing into loose, comfortable clothing. Instead of a traditional table, the session takes place on a plush, supportive floor mat, allowing for a full range of motion.

The Rhythm

Using a combination of hands, elbows, and feet, the therapist applies rhythmic compression along your Sen energy lines to release blockages and stimulate blood flow.

The Stretches

You will be gently guided through a series of assisted yoga-like poses. These passive stretches deeply open the joints and lengthen muscles without you needing to exert effort.

Don’t be surprised if your therapist uses their body weight, climbs onto the mat, or places you in yoga-like poses—this is all part of the traditional Thai bodywork experience.

As the session concludes, you will likely feel a profound sense of physical lightness and mental clarity, often described as an energized yet deeply relaxed state.

Everything you need to know to prepare for your Traditional Thai massage experience.

Attire

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing such as yoga pants or sweatpants and a comfortable t-shirt. Traditional Thai massage is performed fully clothed, and you will need a full range of motion for the assisted stretching.

Technique

Unlike Swedish or deep tissue massage, Nuad Thai is an oil-free modality. Rhythmic compression and stretching are applied directly over your clothing.
